Message Title: The Armor of God (The Breastplate of Righteousness)

Key Scripture: Ephesians 6:10–18

The breastplate of righteousness is something we cannot do without as children of God. Just as the belt of truth is essential, the breastplate of righteousness also has its importance in the life of every believer.

Righteousness is what protects the heart. The heart of every child of God must be protected by righteousness. It is righteousness that enables a child of God to stand confidently before God and firmly against the enemy.

The Biblical Meaning of Righteousness

Righteousness has two important dimensions:

1. The Righteousness We Receive from God Through Christ

Without Christ, we cannot make ourselves righteous enough. 2 Corinthians 5:21 says:

“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”

We are made righteous in Christ. When we put our faith in Jesus, we receive a right standing before the Father.

This is also known as imputed righteousness—righteousness that is credited or put upon us, which we did not earn or merit.

We cannot make ourselves righteous through our own strength or good works. It is Christ who makes us righteous.

2. Righteousness Demonstrated Through Our Conduct

The righteousness we receive from Christ should produce righteousness in our daily lives. What Christ puts in us should eventually be reflected through our conduct, character, and lifestyle.

1 John 3:7 teaches us about the connection between righteousness and righteous living.

Therefore, when we put these two dimensions together, we see that it starts with Christ, and what Christ does in us changes how we live.

It can be demonstrated this way:

A. Christ gives us righteousness.
B. This righteousness changes our lives.
C. Our changed lives cause us to reflect and represent Christ.

What Is the Breastplate?

The breastplate of righteousness is not merely protection from the enemy; it is also a call to live from the righteousness we have received through Christ.

This makes the breastplate of righteousness a protection for the heart and identity of the believer, especially in spiritual warfare.

A physical breastplate was worn by a soldier to protect his vital organs. Paul uses this imagery to teach us that, as believers, we must protect our inner lives.

The enemy does not only attack what is around us; he also seeks to attack our hearts, identity, character, and relationship with God.

The Spiritual Application of the Breastplate of Righteousness

Just as a soldier cannot confidently go into battle without his breastplate, as Christians, we should not live with an unguarded heart.

Proverbs 4:23 teaches us:

“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”

The Bible uses the heart to describe the inner person—our thoughts, desires, motives, and the center of our decisions.

The breastplate of righteousness, therefore, encourages us to guard our hearts, remain rooted in Christ, and stay committed to righteous living.

The breastplate protects our hearts from compromise because even a small degree of compromise can weaken our spiritual discipline and create an opening for the enemy.

The breastplate of righteousness covers and protects our inner man. It helps us stand against guilt, shame, condemnation, and the influence of sin.

It also guards our relationship with God and with others.

Private righteousness matters just as much as public righteousness.

It is possible to look righteous before people while neglecting the condition of our hearts. But God is interested not only in what people see; God is concerned with the condition of our hearts.

How Do We Put On the Breastplate of Righteousness?

Practically, putting on the breastplate of righteousness means:

1. Believe the Gospel and Know That Your Righteousness Comes Through Christ

Your confidence should not come from your perfection. Your confidence comes from knowing that you have been made righteous through Christ.

2. Repent Quickly

When you fall, do not run away from God. Run back to Him.

Do not allow sin to become comfortable in your life. Repent quickly, receive God’s forgiveness, and get back on your feet.

3. Guard Your Heart

Be intentional about what you allow into your heart—what you watch, listen to, think about, and meditate on.

A guarded heart is essential for a disciplined spiritual life.

4. Practice Obedience

Righteousness should not only be something we receive; it should be something we demonstrate through obedience to God’s Word.

5. Reject Condemnation

The enemy will try to use your past failures to make you feel disqualified.

Remember that there is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1).

Conviction draws you back to God; condemnation pushes you away from Him.

6. Walk in Integrity and Holiness

Let your private life agree with your public confession.

What you profess with your mouth should be reflected in your character, conduct, and lifestyle.

7. Depend on the Holy Spirit

Righteous living cannot be achieved by personal strength alone.

We need the help of the Holy Spirit. We must depend on God daily to live according to His standards.

The Breastplate and Spiritual Warfare

Ephesians 6:13–14 teaches us as believers how we should be able to stand and remain spiritually stable when we are attacked. The breastplate of righteousness is an important part of our spiritual armor, protecting our hearts and helping us remain firm in the midst of spiritual battles.

Confessions in Times of Spiritual Battle

1. When temptation comes, your confession should be:
“I belong to Jesus.”

2. When accusations come, your confession should be:
“My righteousness is in Christ.”

3. When compromise comes, confess:
“I choose obedience.”

4. When condemnation comes, your response should be:
“I have already confessed my sins, and I have turned back to Jesus.”

5. When spiritual pressure comes, your confession should be:
“I will stand by the righteousness I have received from Christ.”

These confessions remind us where our identity is found and help us remain spiritually stable when we are faced with temptation, accusations, compromise, condemnation, and spiritual pressure.

Three Dimensions of the Breastplate of Righteousness

1. Right Standing

This means standing in what Christ has done for you. It has to do with righteousness received.

Our right standing before God is not based on our own works, but on what Christ has done for us. We stand in the righteousness we have received through Christ.

2. Right Character

This has to do with righteousness developed.

As believers, the righteousness we have received should also be developed in our character. Our lives should reflect the work God is doing within us.

3. Right Conduct

This means showing what Christ is doing through you. It has to do with righteousness displayed.

What Christ is doing within us should become visible through the way we live, the decisions we make, and the way we conduct ourselves.

Therefore, the breastplate of righteousness speaks of righteousness received, righteousness developed, and righteousness displayed—in our standing, our character, and our conduct.
